UK Graduate Route 2026: The Two-Year Window Is Closing for New Applicants
The UK Graduate Route has been one of the strongest post-study work propositions for Indian students. That proposition is changing. If you apply by 31 December 2026, you can still receive the full two-year permission (three years for PhD/doctoral graduates). From January 2027, the standard length drops to 18 months. Switching into skilled work also sits against higher salary thresholds.
What the Graduate Route currently offers
Eligible graduates can stay in the UK and work, look for work, or gain experience at most skill levels without sponsorship during the Graduate Route period. That flexibility is why families still prioritize UK degrees — but the length of that flexibility now depends on when you apply.
The December 2026 cut-off
Apply for the Graduate Route by 31 December 2026 and the classic duration still applies: two years for most bachelor's and master's graduates, three years for PhDs. Applications made from January 2027 fall under the shorter 18-month framework for the standard cohort. Skilled Worker thresholds after the Graduate Route
Many students use the Graduate Route as a bridge to a sponsored Skilled Worker visa. Going rates have risen. Figures widely cited for planning include about £41,700 a year in general cases, with a lower new-entrant rate around £30,960 in defined situations for those moving directly off the Graduate Route.
